Coffee, cake and the price of flour

After months of busy schedules, I was finally able this week to meet up with BC from Beans and Caviar, and have coffee and cake. A chocolate and hazelnut cake that was light and fluffy, but not too sweet!

One of the things BC and I talked about was the recent price increases in flour. I had recently been shocked to see the 10kg bag of Robin Hood flour go up in price from $8.99 to $13.49 a bag! And not only go up in price, but there have been alot of empty shelves where the huge bags of flour normally sit at my grocery stores.

Now Marvin goes through alot of flour. At least 1/2 a cup a day, more if I am making something, and muffins have been ongoing for awhile now and show no sign of taking a break. Add in pizza dough, bread, cinnamon buns, pancakes, heck alot of baked goods, and that's alot of flour!

BC had a great idea over on her website, which you can see here, but I will share in part: What is the price of a large bag of flour in your area? And what type do you use? I personally am fussy and will not use some of the other brands around, even at a cost savings, which isn't a big difference, but I may have to ease up on that flour prejudice if my brand keeps going up in price!

UPDATE!

10kg bag of Robin Hood for $10.49 at Loeb. I bought one bag but will likely go back and buy more.

Here in Peru, I have only found flour in kilo sized bag thus far and they are about $1.80 each. If I buy 6 bags at a time I bought the package for about $8.

I don't buy large bags. I buy King Arthur that I stocked up on big time at Trader Joe's when it was $3.49.

Living in Holland we don't have access to many different flour brands, but the mill where I buy my bread flour had it's prices up twice now (in 4 months!).
I used to pay 3.65€ for a 5 kg bag of simple bread flour, it's 4,95 now for whole wheat...

In Scotland we buy Dove's Farm Organic strong wholewheat bread flour, 1.5 kg for $2.81 CDN (£1.39).

So, we're paying $1.86 CDN (£0.92) / kg while you're paying $1.35.

Of course, we're doing organic and as local as we can get, which bumps the price up a bit. We also don't buy in such quantity, which affects the price.

Like Peabody, I like King Arthur and my Trader Joe's had it for $3.29 for a 5 pound bag. Whole Foods carries other King Arthur flours for about $3.99 to $4.99 (5 pound bags). Butter, heavy cream and half & half here is outrageously over priced!

I'm near London, Ontario Canada. I & my mom have been Five Rose flour fans for as long as I can remember! It is currently priced around $13 for a 20 KG bag.
I recently bought Baker's Hood from Costco 20 KG for $15. My first time buying this brand.
I am a cross-border shopper and I always find flour in the US to be more expensive than Canada.
